Sanatorium Review

Nafta Sanatorium — my visit & honest assessment

By Alexandr Umanetz · May 28, 2026 · 8 min read

Nafta Sanatorium — 11-floor building on Heydar Aliyev Avenue, Naftalan

I'll be honest with you: before I recommend any sanatorium to a client, I visit it myself. I walk the corridors, I talk to the doctors, I eat the food, and I pay attention to the things that don't show up in brochures. Nafta Sanatorium was no exception.

First impressions

The building is hard to miss — 11 floors, central location on Heydar Aliyev Avenue, right in the heart of Naftalan. When I arrived, the lobby felt calm and organized, not the controlled chaos you sometimes encounter at busier properties during check-in season. The staff at reception were professional and switched between Russian and English without any hesitation. That matters for my clients, many of whom arrive without a word of Azerbaijani.

The rooms are genuinely good. Mine was clean, well-maintained, and larger than I expected for a standard category. Upper floors give you real views over the city and the green belt — I'd specifically request floor 7 or higher when booking.

The medical centre — what I was most interested in

This is where Nafta distinguishes itself, and where I spent most of my time paying attention.

The medical department occupies the entire lower ground floor. What immediately stood out to me was the BTL physiotherapy equipment throughout the treatment rooms — this is the same brand used in serious European rehabilitation clinics, not the Soviet-era hardware you still find in some of the older Naftalan properties. There are 19 treatment rooms, a salt room, a dedicated massage room, and consultations available across 8 medical specialties.

The Naftalan baths themselves — 10 in total, including a 4-chamber bath — are well-maintained and properly managed. The 4-chamber configuration is worth noting: it allows targeted treatment of specific limbs independently, which is clinically meaningful for patients with asymmetric joint conditions or localized psoriasis. It's a detail most first-time visitors overlook, but one I always check.

I spoke with the attending physician during my visit. The approach here is individualized — guests receive a proper consultation on arrival and a program built around their specific condition, not a generic "standard package" applied to everyone. The doctors I interacted with were knowledgeable and unhurried. That's not always the case across Naftalan, and it matters enormously when you're dealing with someone's chronic condition.

Food & daily life

Three meals a day, buffet-style, included in the standard package. The restaurant seats 130 guests and the spread was genuinely varied — Azerbaijani, Turkish, and European options at every sitting. I've eaten in most of the sanatoriums in Naftalan by now, and Nafta's kitchen is among the better ones. Fresh, well-prepared, and clearly adapted to the dietary context of medical guests. If you have specific dietary requirements related to your treatment, the kitchen accommodates — just inform them on arrival.

The evenings surprised me. Nafta has a Disco Bar with live music, karaoke, and billiards, plus a gym on the top floor with panoramic views. For guests doing 14–21 day stays, this is more important than it sounds. Long treatment courses can feel isolating if the property has nothing to offer after 6pm. Nafta handles this better than most.

What I tell my clients

When someone asks me whether Nafta is the right choice for them, my answer depends on their profile. For a first-time visitor to Naftalan — someone who wants modern medical infrastructure, genuinely attentive staff, good food, and a central location without paying 5-star prices — Nafta is one of my most consistent recommendations.

It is not Chinar. The rooms are smaller, the spa less elaborate, the overall atmosphere less resort-like. But for the majority of patients who come to Naftalan for serious medical treatment rather than luxury tourism, that trade-off makes complete sense. The medical department is where Nafta earns its reputation, and that's exactly where your money should be going.

"Request a higher floor when you confirm, and arrive with your medical documentation from home. The doctors here will actually use it."
